Internal Influences

Past Accomplishments - Good Average Last Year

The good grades I have been getting, and specifically a good average of 96 last year have significantly affected how I have been thinking over my career. Getting good grades makes me feel like becoming a forensic scientist is an attainable career despite having to continue 4 years of education in my post-secondary schooling. By keeping this goal of continuously getting a good average throughout high school, I feel motivated to work hard to become a forensic scientist.

Interests - Science & Art

My interest in science and art affect my future choices concerning my career because taking courses related to science and art narrows which careers I will choose from in the future. The courses I have planned to take align with the path of becoming a forensic scientist or other careers related to science and art, such as a scientific illustrator or architect. Consequently, the career I settle on will dictate which courses I take in post-secondary.

Values - Respect

The fact that I value respect will affect my choices as it filters out potential environments that do not align with this moral of mine. This means I will likely go to a university or college that is known for being inclusive, collaborative, and diverse, and will like to work in an environment where the company does not neglect employee wellbeing, equality, or clear communication. In my life, I will surround myself with individuals who respect my boundaries as I do theirs, and respect my community by volunteering and trying to live more eco-friendly.

External Influences

Parental Expectations

For me, the expectations from my parents inspire me to always do better as they provide constant support for my dreams and aspirations. For my post-secondary education, they constantly encourage me to go for good programs and schools like UofT and have been saving money since I was a kid for my education. Concerning my career, my parents have always wanted me to be a doctor or engineer; so I can make lots of money, and even though I think it's good to have extra money, I do not think I will need an excessive amount because I expect to be living alone in a small house when I am older. This is why I have decided to become a forensic scientist so I can focus on what I enjoy.

Technological Advances

When speaking about technological advances, I am mainly worried about how artificial intelligence could limit the jobs available in the future. I am concerned that I will spend thousands of dollars on education for a career that is no longer needed because people have begun to rely on AI for it. This includes jobs such as graphic designers, photo editors, and illustrators. This made me think of becoming a forensic examiner because although AI can provide new methods for interpreting evidence, it is predicted that it will remain as a tool rather than a replacement for the job.

Peer Influence

I believe peer influence could have a big impact on what career a person chooses depending on how similar the goals of you and your peers are. Personally, I like to surround myself with people who have similar goals to me. Obviously not exactly, but having friends who also want to work hard to get a job they like can help inspire me to do the same. I believe peers are also a good source of information and can expose me to different career paths I did not even know before, which could affect which jobs I chose. Along with that, my peers would be able to give me advice on which post secondary schools might suit my goals which I can then use once I continue my research on which university/college I want to study at.
